Hard and Soft skills. Which is more important?

Our training does not end with a diploma. To be a professional, you need to constantly follow industry trends and learn new things. Moreover, the development of a person as a person and a specialist in his or her field is a continuous process. And what needs to be developed? Let's discuss it together with a team of professionals from LLC «BinomCraft».
To be successful in life, you need to have a lot of knowledge, skills and abilities. This is an undeniable fact.
  • Knowledge is our theoretical base, i.e. information that has entered our brain through various channels and remains in it.
  • Skills - this is working out the received theory in practice, i.e. the ability to perform some action with new knowledge.
  • Skills are skills brought to automaticity through regular practice and repetition.

In today's complex world we need to constantly develop and possess a large amount of knowledge, skills and abilities. The latter are particularly valued. What skills are needed? The most popular classification of skills nowadays is the so-called Hard skills and Soft skills.

Hard skills
Hard skills are the professional skills that you need to acquire in order to work in your chosen profession. For example, for a pizza maker - it is the ability to work properly with dough, knowledge of pizza recipes, compliance with standards, etc. For a pizzeria manager - it is organisation and control of work, cost optimisation, analysis of business indicators, etc.

Hard skills always have a clear link to the sphere of activity, its specifics, rules and procedures of a particular company. Another peculiarity Hard skills are easy to test and measure through various tests and examinations. For example, the ability to drive a car, to speak a foreign language or to use a certain computer programme.
Soft skills
Soft skills (soft or flexible skills) are universal personal skills that are needed regardless of the field of work. They are not taught at school or university, but employers look at them. A few years ago they were labelled as skills of the future, but now they have become skills of the present. The world we live in is changing so fast that knowledge is no longer as valuable as it used to be. They have become very accessible. If you have access to the internet, you can basically learn anything.

In today's world it is very important what we are like: whether we are able to think systematically, to find new solutions, to adapt to change, whether we are inclined to learn, whether we can understand other people, be sensitive, flexible and empathic; whether we can interact and communicate effectively with each other.
Soft skills are fine-tuning, thanks to which a career develops faster, warm relations with others are formed, and in general a successful life is built, in which a person feels happier.

Soft skills, in particular, include:
  • The ability to learn;
  • critical thinking;
  • emotional intelligence;
  • creativity;
  • goal-setting;
  • flexibility;
  • effective communication;
  • co-operation and teamwork, as well as a number of others.

Soft skills are not particularly divided into professions and everyone who wants to be effective in any sphere of activity, and simply to become a good person, should develop these skills. Does it mean that one should put aside books with professional literature and switch to books on psychology? No. It is necessary to develop both groups of skills. Then your personality will be harmonious, you will feel truly effective, in demand, successful and, of course, happy.
